Allendale
Often marked on maps as Allendale Town, Allendale is a large village in the Northumberland part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Halfway between Carlisle in Cumbria and Newcastle Upon Tyne, Allendale is home to many commuters who work in Newcastle, a major city in England's north-east.

not far from the Scottish border, many farmhouses were fortified to
protect residents and livestock against reiver raids, a common problem
between the 13th and 17th centuries when Border reivers would make
incursions into the north of England. Allendale has some 40 such
farmhouses or "bastles" in the area, some of which are in a state of
ruin. Mining was a major industry in Allendale and a long adit, the Barnett Level was driven for a considerable distance under the village. The local smelting mill is now home to the Allendale Brewery. The Hexham and Allendale Railway served the village but was closed to passengers in the 1930's and to good in the 1950's. There
are three pubs in Allendale, The Golden Lion, The King's Head and the
Allendale Inn and there is a bunkhouse catering for up to 34 people.
Allendale has a village shop, a Co-Operative store, a butchers and a
tea room as well as an art café and a holistic healing centre.
Allendale welcomes the New Year in spectacular style with a Fire Festival in which revellers called guisers carry barrels of lighted tar on their heads.
The poet, Philip Larkin came from Allendale.
