ALLENHEADS
Allenheads An interesting mining village in the North Pennines with plenty to see on the surface. The mining history here was brief, starting in 1880 and ending only sixteen years later in 1896. The mine was re-opened in the 1970's for a short time as the Beaumont Mine by the British Steel Corporation to extract flourite but the venture was not profitable. Today Allenheads has a contemporary arts centre, a café and an exhibition hall where an Armstrong Whitworth hydraulic engine is on display. The village also has a pub which is well worth a visit, the Allenheads Inn outside of which is a train of miners' ore carts together with an electric locomotive on display along with a pillory. The North Pennines Observatory was opened in 2017 at the village's Old School House to take advantage of the relative lack of light pollution from nearby towns and cities. The first Saturday in September sees the Highforest Show, a community event which features a dog show, stalls and other attractions allowing the village to showcase it's talents.
