Carr Shield

Sometimes spelt Carrshield, this small settlement is in the Northumberland part of the North Pennines not far from Allendale. There used to be a school here, built in 1851 but is now three houses. There are no shops here and the Post Office closed due to lack of business. The local Methodist chapel holds fortnighly services. The area is surrounded by many farms including a stud and rehabilitation centre for horses. Nearby is the Carr Shield Camping Barn, located in a former mine shop next to Barney Craig Mine. Scraithole Mine is not far away and there are other mines in the area, some of which can be explored.
