ALSTON TO SLAGGYFORD

Railway Map

The South Tynedale Railway is a two foot (61cm) guage railway running five miles (8km) from Alston in Cumbria to Slaggyford in Northumberland.  Built along the bed of the former standard guage of the former Alston Line which was closed by British Rail in 1976, this volunteer run railway has been providing pleasure trips since 1983.  The stretch from Lintley Halt to Slaggyford was opened in 2018 and it is hope that the line will eventually be extended to Haltwhistle.
Trains are normally run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends from the end of March to the end of October.  Trains are also run on Wednesdays during the main school holidays.  Santa specials during the weekends in the run up to Christmas in December.
