Westgate

Taking it's name from Westgate Castle, a Peel tower-cum-hunting lodge which formed the western gatehouse of Stanhope
Deer Park, Westgate in Weardale is situated between St. John's Chapel and Stanhope and is not far from Daddry Shield and
Eastgate.  Westgate Castle fell into disrepair in the 17th century and was demolished in 1647.
Westgate has a station on the Weardale Railway line but it is currently closed to passengers although the line has been
preserved here.  Currently passenger services only run as far as Stanhope but there are plans to eventually operate the line up
to Wearhead.
As in many other villages in the area the Methodist Church has had a presence here with a Primative Methodist Chapel being
built in 1871 and incorporating a previous chapel built 47 years earlier.  The Church of St. Andrew is the Anglican church here,
dating from 1864.
Nearby is Slitt Wood where there is an abandoned lead mine and a wheel pit.
There is a caravan site in the village and also a football and basketball court.
