TEESDALE

Teesdale
View from the top of Teesdale

Running in a north-west to south-east direction Teesdale is one of the two main valleys in the North Pennines.  The River Tees emanates from the foot of Cross Fell, flowing through Cow Green Reservoir and over Cauldron Snout and High Force before passing through Middleton-in-Teesdale before emerging into the lower Tees Valley after Barnard Castle before finally flowing out into the North Sea at Hartlepool.
Upper Teesdale is very remote with the occasional farms and barns dotting the landscape.  As you journey down the dale the land becomes more developed and the main town here is Middleton.  Other settlements include Eggleston, Romaldkirk and Langdon Beck.
The Pennine Way runs the length of Teesdale and passes over Great Dun Fell and Cross Fell, the highest points on the 250 mile
(400km) walk.
A lot of mining occurred here in Teesdale and there are a number of mines to the north of Middleton which can still be accessed but they are on the Raby Estate and it is a good idea to get permission to visit them.
